When schools actively involve parents and engage community resources they are able to respond more effectively to the needs of students; emotionally and academically. Research shows that students who have parents and community involved in education are more likely to: adapt well to school, attend school more regularly, complete homework consistently, earn higher grades, graduate and go on to post-secondary schooling, but more importantly have better social skills, improved behavior, better relationships with their parents, higher self-esteem, etc. This session will be two parts: how I involve the community within my classroom to extend the learning and effectively meet the needs of my students and begin formulating a plan on how participants can involve their own communities.
